Lanting Pavilion

About 13 km from Shaoxing, the Lanting (Orchid Pavilion) is famous for "The Preface to the Orchid Pavilion Anthology" (the opening words to A Collection of Works Written in Lanting), written by Wang Xishi, the well-known calligrapher of the Eastern Jin Dynasty, in 353 AD. The anthology is regarded one of the most treasured pieces of calligraphy in existence. Therefore, the Orchid Pavilion has been well reputed as a sacred place of calligraphy for over 1600 years.

The garden nestles against green hills covered with luxuriant trees and dense bamboo groves. Around Lanting are murmuring crystal-clear streams. In the garden the five architectures-the Geese Pond Pavilion, the Wine -cup Floating Pavilion, the Lanting Tablet, the Imperial Stone Tablet Pavilion and the Right Wine-cup Floating Pavilion, the Lanting Tablet, the Imperial Stone Tablet Pavilion and the Right Wing Army General Temple are fine works of art.
